Are you left handed? There is a lot of information out there about left-handedness, and the way it works with right brain, left brain learning. Here are some left handed facts with which you may be unfamiliar.



 

Do you know what percentage of the population is left handed? It’s 15%. That’s all! Most people think it’s at least 25%. But, the left handed fact is, it’s only 15%.
Have you ever noticed on television, when someone is being interviewed, the host is on the right, facing left? The person being interviewed is facing right, which is the less dominant position. When right handed people draw figures, they are facing left, just like the interviewer. But, when lefties draw a figure, it is usually facing to the right!
Are you a twin? A little know left handed fact is that in a set of twins, one will be right handed and the other left handed.
Left handed children are more likely to experience stuttering and dyslexia. If they are forced to change their handedness as a child, this will become even more pronounced.

 

In general, left handed children reach puberty about 5 months after their right handed peers. You’ve probably heard of famous “south-paws” in baseball, but left handed facts show that left handers also excel at tennis, fencing, and swimming. You’ll notice that three of these—baseball, tennis, and fencing—all involve mastery of a tool. Being one of the few left handed people in the field gives them a distinct advantage over your opponent. They don’t know where the projectile (baseball, tennis ball, foil tip) is coming from.
More little-known left handed facts are that 25% of the Apollo astronauts have been left handed. That’s 250% more than the normal level of left handedness in any group. Of the 5 designers of Macintosh computers, 4 of them were lefties! Men are two times more likely to be lefties than women are. While the general population may be 15% left handed, MENSA membership is populated to 20% left handed people. Unfortunately, left handed people are 3 times more likely to become alcoholic! Two right handed people have only a 2% chance of having a left handed child. However, two left handed people have a 50% chance of having a left handed child.

 

Male cats are usually left pawed. (Females are right pawed.) High levels of testosterone present during pregnancy may contribute to left handedness. Lefties are better at processing multiple stimuli (which probably helps explain their skill with video games).
Older women are more likely to give birth to a left handed child.
Using everyday tools:
• 50% use a computer mouse with their right hand
• 68% use their right hand when handling scissors
• 74% use their right hand to wield a steak knife.
